Chapter 34

“I think it’s possible I may never marry,” Angela said tentatively as she turned the stem of the gilt-edged crystal wine goblet between her thumb and forefinger.

She glanced out over Central Park at night from the sixtieth-floor $50 million condo of the Townsends. She turned back to Cliff, who sat across the dining room table from her. A stunning collection of crystal, silver, and fine porcelain filled the space between them.

“But I’m absolutely sure I’ll never stop working. Never. I need to make my own money, have my own real-world responsibilities. I have no interest in staying home and being some man’s little wifey. Besides, I like being the boss. And I’m really good at it.”

She looked carefully at Cliff to gauge his reaction.

The old man gave her a warm smile. “In a lot of ways, you sound like me,” he said.

“What’s wrong with that?” she asked.

“Nothing. Absolutely nothing.” He raised his goblet in a toast. She clinked hers against his. “Here’s to people who understand work,” he said, “people like us.”

Angela kept her eyes riveted directly into Cliff’s eyes as she took a micro-sip of the insanely expensive 1980 Château Lafite Rothschild he’d had the butler bring out for their intimate dinner.

Yes, she thought, it’s working. It’s working. First, showing him that I’m the complete opposite of Charlie. It’s essential that I replace her as the woman in his life. Then, showing him how well I understand him and the world he comes from. Prove to him that the last thing I want is to be dependent on him and his money. Convince him I want the opposite of everything he is accustomed to women wanting from him.

Reverse psychology, just like Jack Price taught her. When you really, really want something, make the other guy think you don’t want it at all. Nine times out of ten, it works, Jack had said. And the one time it doesn’t work, well, you weren’t going to get it anyway.

She had a moment’s regret about Jack and what she’d put him through. Then she decided she had finally gotten her full revenge. And besides, she was saving his ass with the new job he would get from Charlie. Maybe that finally evened the score between them. Or came close enough.

Cliff took a long, noisy gulp of his wine, draining his glass yet again. He was already half into his second bottle. Angela was beginning to understand why Charlie complained about his uncouth ways. If the next thing he did was burp, or even fart, she would pretend to be charmed. This was work—hard work. She was determined to succeed at this dirty job and get justly rewarded for her hard labor when the time came.

“So, Angela,” he said, without releasing any gases, “what do you think of our new place?”

“It’s nice,” she said with deliberate understatement. She did not want to seem too impressed or too eager. In fact, the girl from the projects was utterly blown away. Here she was in one of the premiere new condos on Billionaires’ Row on West 57th Street.
